A quick look at trends shaping the profession across Maryland, DC, and the nation.
Telehealth Expands the RT's Reach
Respiratory therapists are increasingly involved in remote patient monitoring for chronic conditions like COPD and asthma. Virtual pulmonary rehabilitation, teleconsultation for ventilator management, and home-based monitoring programs are opening new avenues for RT practice — and CMS reimbursement policies continue to evolve in support of these services.
Workforce Demand Stays Strong
Projected job growth for respiratory therapists remains well above the national average, with particular need in critical care, neonatal specialties, and underserved areas — including parts of western Maryland and the Eastern Shore. For students considering the field, or working RTs looking at what's ahead, the outlook is encouraging.
Interstate Compact Gains Momentum
The Respiratory Care Interstate Compact (RCIC) continues to advance, with states joining to allow multi-state practice under a single license. This effort, championed by the AARC, could significantly reduce licensing barriers for RTs who work or live near state lines — relevant for many MD/DC practitioners.
Degree Advancement Conversations Continue
The profession is actively discussing whether a bachelor's degree should become the standard entry-level credential for respiratory therapists. While the conversation continues, the trend is clear: continuing education, advanced credentials, and professional development matter more than ever.
Conference by the Sea
